For those of us who grew up in the Philippines during the late 1980s, turning on the radio was far more than casual entertainment. It was a daily ritual intertwined with our memories—school commutes, first crushes, high school reunions, afternoon study sessions, and those quiet late nights when the soft voice of a DJ was the only company in the dark.

Many of us grew up loyal to Magic 89.9 and Mellow Touch 94.7. Even today, hearing the opening notes of certain songs instantly transports us back to the streets of Manila.

Magic 89.9 and the Energy of Being Young

Magic 89.9 signed on for regular broadcasting on Valentine's Day, February 14, 1986. By the close of the decade, it broadcasted 24 hours a day and became the definitive audio connection for youth across Metro Manila.

There was an unmistakable thrill in waiting for a song you loved. You couldn't search for a title or tap a screen. You sat by your radio cassette boombox with a blank tape inserted, fingers hovering over RECORD and PLAY, ready to capture your favorite track the second the DJ played it. And when the DJ spoke over the song's outro—well, that was just part of the authentic radio experience!

Mellow Touch 94.7: "More Music, Less Talk"

On the other side of the musical spectrum was Mellow Touch 94.7. Founded earlier in 1973, Mellow Touch became revered for its soothing acoustic approach and famous motto: "more music, less talk."

Where Magic offered high energy, Mellow Touch provided peaceful calm for quiet rainy afternoons, late-night heart-to-hearts, and unwinding after hours stuck in EDSA traffic. The understated delivery let the melodies speak for themselves.

A Rich and Varied FM Spectrum

Manila's airwaves offered incredible diversity. A glance at historical dial listings reveals iconic frequencies: MRS 92.3, 99.5 RT, DWLS 97.1, RJ FM 100.3, DZFE 98.7, and DWXB 102.7. Each frequency possessed an unmistakable sonic character, inviting listeners to explore the dial.

AM Radio: The Pulse of News & Society

While FM was dedicated to Filipino music and pop hits, AM radio was the beating heart of society. Families gathered around AM sets for news reports, typhoon trackers, serialized radio sarswela dramas, and public service programs from trusted institutions like DZRH, DZBB, DZXL, DZAS, and Radio Veritas.

The Lost Art of Anticipation

Looking back, the lack of instant on-demand control was precisely what made radio magical. You couldn't skip ahead; you had to wait and anticipate. And when your song finally filled the room, the joy was shared with thousands of other listeners across the city at the exact same moment.

At JeepRadio, we created an online home where you can relive that feeling every single day, with authentic sounds, thumping jeepney bass, and live Philippine streams.
